I have noticed systemd slowing down my computer as well.
There are some tweaks you can do to make it boot quicker. AFAIK this is
mostly due to journctl logging excessively. This coupled with network
manager eventually makes the system crawl.
I could be wrong about this, but I think it might be the cause.
You can limit the logging capability to less space (I limit mine to
50MB) that way it doesn't built up cruft.
Also it seems a larger harddrive will take longer to boot that a smaller
one, in my experience. I tested booting a 100 Gig hardrive and it went
reasonably fast. Once I moved to 500 Gig the boot time is significantly
slower.
Not sure why the password prompt never shows on some occasions,
though... I have not had that issue. You should check your error logs
to get more detail.
You can check the journctl log by running journctl from a terminal
If you get stuck at a black screen drop to a TTY (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and log
in there and run journctl
