Works for me on linux:
java -cp lucene.jar org.apache.lucene.queryParser.QueryParser '"a b c d e f g h 
i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z"'
"a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z"

Must be an XP command line problem.
