RedHat is a good distribution and many distributions use its rpm format (including SuSE).
Being American they quickly noticed the importance of marketing and are now number one because of it (e.g. they were first with the "enterprise server" notion).
As for software quality I think SuSE has the edge (e.g. Oracle 9 certified first on SuSE). But as with all linux some tweaking is always required. The thing that SuSE really has going for it is that as the largest Multinational/Multilingual distribution, they have tended to be more "worldy" in their outlook and it reflects in their product.
They each have their strong points and their weak points and even the critics have no finality on this one. Pick your poison an enjoy. For me I have watched SuSE grow from below Mandrake and Slakware in Market share to Number 2 based on quality so I am happy (except for the fact that they have never done a SuSE ppc after 7.1).
