I cannot believe that I am reading this...!! What is the point of
Open Source Software then?! Are you guys suggesting that people
are only free to share the less commercial software and that when
it comes to something where some money can be made then access is
supposed to be blocked?! In any case, ask yourself where the
versions of the different software that Novell bundles into SuSE
come from.... I do not think they pay programmers at Novell to
write all this software! They are picking from other projects that
are already running and putting on their stamp and a few additions.
Should we say that those programmers also need to charge Novell for
all the work that they are doing...

You may want to note that SuSe doesnt just "stamp" these packages. They actually improve on them from day to day (of course tailored only for SuSE linux)

anyhow, since Kiggs (the businessman i was feeling sorry for) is cool with this, i withdraw all my comments.

case closed :)

Marinate on that.

is suse 9.3 supposed to be duplicated and
redistributed freely by anyone? what does suse's
license say? is this not illegal? how does suse
(and commercial distributors like Kym.net gain?)

This is what the license says:- "The Software is a
collective work of Novell. You may make and use
unlimited copies of the Software for Your distribution
and use within Your Organization. You may make and
distribute unlimited copies of the Software outside
Your organization provided that: 1) You receive no
consideration; and, 2) you do not bundle or combine the
Software with another offering (e.g., software, hardware, or service)." So as far as I can see, there
is nothing illegal about distributing it for free.

in (1) above, does "consideration" mean "money" ? :-)
(sorry, am not good at legal jargon)

Usually money, but not necessarily. Consideration means
something of value that is given in exchange for getting
something from another person

ah ok. it can be a good practice for East African Center for
Open Source Software to redistribute the less commercial
distros like FC3, Gentoo, FreeBSD, Slackware, etc.., rather
than SuSE. I feel that although Novell allows free
redistribution without "consideration", these guys need bucks
for the work they inject into SuSE to make it more refined than
many other distros.

(what do u think Kiggs, SuSE distributor for UG? EACOSS is
taking you out of business!)
