Not just slack and arch in defence of other distro's they all allow
you to edit your config files via text, that what unix is all about
"everything is a file". The typical user however is not able to tell
what driver with drive his display and what the refresh rate of his
monitor is.

why not boot with a live cd like knoppix jsust so you can rip the parameters
it has autodetected ie the xorg.conf file
then install your redhat without x, and tweak its xorg.conf file by pasting
the parameters knoppix discovered
(if you are not using xorg then the file should be soething like
xfree86.conf)

particular attention should be given to resolution, modeline statemets,
horizontral refresh rate and vertical sync values.

that whjy i like distros like slackware and arch linus
you get to do most things under the hood ;-)
