Dear I-Networkers, One of the esteemed members of the i-network mailinglist, Esther Nakkazi, is currently based at the massachusetts institute of technology (www.mit.edu or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mit ), one of the most important universities in regards to the Internet.
MIT houses some of the most brilliant minds in the field of Internet technology and having a representative in that exact spot gives us, i-networkers, a unique opportunity that Esther is willing us to help with. We have come up with the idea to organize a debate on this list, of which this email is the first, to ask a question to one of the scientists at MIT on behalf of all of us. As these scientist are rather busy people, we want to limit ourselves to 1 researcher and 1 question. So, to all of you, the question: who should this person be, and what would be the question that you would like to ask this person? Once we come up with a list of questions, we will organize a Poll on the I-Network website, and Esther will find a camera and approach the scientist of our choice and try to pose the question with the most points. Her movie will be posted on the I-Network website (or maybe we can have another good get-together to present the movie, we will make plans for that along the way) All discussions about this great opportunity will be hosted on the i-network mailinglist (so if you get this email through a different channel, this is you chance to subscribe and join us: http://www.dgroups.org/groups/i-network/index.cfm?op=dsp_join ) To give you an idea of who we might be able to approach, these persons still seem to work at MIT and are or have been very very important for IT and the Internet: Tim Berners-Lee. He invented the World Wide Web. If it was not for him, we would not be surfing right now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Berners-Lee Richard Stallman. He invented Free Software. (Also called open-source, though he does not like that phrase). His profile is a very cool read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Stallman (we will have to find out if Mr. Stallman is still on campus, information is a bit vague here) David D. Clark. He was the Architect of the Internet in the crucial years between 1981 and 1989. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_D._Clark Nicholas Negroponte The founder of the One Laptop per Child association, or now, the XO laptop (www.laptop.org) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Negroponte Feel free to suggest more people that you think are based at MIT if you like. Esther will try to locate them physically from where she is based, and let us know what is possible and what not. Deadline for posting questions will be 30th of March, we'll run the Poll in the first week of April. Esther then has 1 month to find our researcher. So, to all of you, Who will it be, and what do you want to know? rgds, Reinier & Esther _______________________________________________ LUG mailing list [email protected] http://kym.net/mailman/listinfo/lug %LUG is generously hosted by INFOCOM http://www.infocom.co.ug/ The above comments and data are owned by whoever posted them (including attachments if any).
