'Skils vs Papers'

I must say in the states most prospective employers look at skills
before papers. Especially when hiring for a position that requires 5 - 7
years of experience. By that point what college or university you went
to becomes a talking point where the interviewer may ask you how your
Alma mater's NCAA football or basketball team is doing this year.

However certification still carry a lot of weight since they show a
level of specialization that the employer is looking for. I have seen
college dropouts with tons of certs get jobs before the guy who got a
masters in computer engineering.

Skills vs Papers who would you love to have on your team, IT being a
growing field in Uganda its inevitable that hiring will embrace head
hunting and less of interviews, and in this world we have seen guys with
loads of papers who cant do naught, thus a 'BAD' candidate might get a
job before a paper laden fellow in the near future.

Like it or not, we live in a world where Papers speak before you get a
chance to express your self.It is not always the case that when one
applies for a job, they are already known by the recruitment team. Most
times the reverse is true. Now, as opposed to relying on one's tales of
how 'BAD' they are at this or the other, a universally acceptable
standard helps align the selector's perception of the applicant. That is
where these MSc, BSc, PHD, MCSE, CCNA, CCIE, RHCE, LPI qualifications
give those who have them a lead over others. This is not to say that I
entirely agree with that modus operandi, but again, being part of this
world, I have to accept that it is the way forward.

C'est la vie. A Bientot.
