Hi,

To show people how fast local Internet can be, and to try to silence people
complaining that there is no local content, we uploaded a partial copy of
Wikipedia to our server http://schoolwiki.mountbatten.net/

Its about 5GB of data, 5500 articles, 34,000 images and 20 million words.

On our datanet link, pages load in under a second (some images take a bit
longer). Its quite a breath of fresh air, compared to loading wikipedia over
our international link.

The project for this version of wikipedia was done by the Wikimedia foundation
and SOS Children UK. Its mainly aimed at children who follow the British
curriculum, which makes it pretty usefull for people in secondary schools in
Uganda. Basically, if you cram all of this, you will probably pass.

Off course, the most interesting page is:
http://schoolwiki.mountbatten.net/wp/u/Uganda.htm

(disclaimer: we didnt write the content, we just provide this as a free
service. Credits go to Peter Scott, who helped obtaining the original file,
and Datanet, for being the most kick-ass ISP in Uganda, providing us with a
1MB! local link. If you are not in Uganda, or if you are on a VSAT connecion,
its a very bad idea to visit this site. The original wikipedia is much much
faster for you: http://www.wikipedia.org and you are not wasting our precious
bandwidth, too)

regardless of all that, just enjoy.

sorry for crossposting, please forward to anyone in Uganda who might be
interested. please forward the message intact.

rgds,
