Curiousity on my part: Why would the Telcos (UTL and MTN) not provide internet through *dsl connections? Is it because of copper quality, cost, etc? In Denmark (and I think most of Europe) *dsl is the prevalent means of providing broad band internet although technologies like Cable and Fiber to the Home are getting increasing market shares. In town and city centers you can get 20/2 (downstream/upstream) MBit/s connections relatively easy on an ADSL2 connection. The fiber providers offer up to 50/50 MBit/s connections. These are all products aimed at the private costumer at reasonably affordable prices (< USD 70 per month, the 50/50 fiber is just over USD 100). Many of these connections even include telephony/VoIP (no charge for calling DK land lines - cheap mobile and long distance calls) and 'cable'-TV provided through the internet link. So why would the Telcos here opt-out on *dsl? I do understand, that satellite connections have a larger marketshare here as that is the only outgoing connection. But with the fiber coming from Mombasa (hopefully soon) DSL connections at least within the Kampala and larger town centres would sound the most profitable if they can use the existing phone cabling?
