Hi all!
We had a very good LUG meeting earlier tonight at the Second Life Training
Centre in Ntinda. Thank You to Robert-Jan for the hospitality!
About 30-40 people attended - more than last time - including 2 or 3 ladies
(not counting the 2nd life staff). Why is it important for me to mention this?
We need more ladies simply because they are half of the population and - more
importantly - often have the largest influence on our children. Someone once
said 'educate a woman - educate a nation'
Simon Vass (of Etech U) and Kelly Spencer (of Kampala International Hospital)
had good talks on '15 (ish) command line command you should know' and
'rsync/rdiff-backup' as well as a quick intro on IRC.
The talks were less 'geeky' than last time which I think will promote the LUG
and the knowledge about and of Linux and other OSS.
Again ISOs and CDs were handed out.
I noticed that several people grabbed the Second Life Pamphlets on the desks.
Also I was explaining to several people about this list. Maybe we should think
about making a pamphlet of our own? Including pointers to our web site, the
list and the IRC channel.
Lastly it was nice that there was beverages at the site. I dont know where we are
going to be next time but if we get a site where it is possible, maybe we should
buy a few crates at a depot and sell the sodas/beers at standard prices using the
profits to promote the LUG & Linux/FOSS e.g. By buying empty CDs to hand out.
Again thanks to everybody at the meet!
Jan
PS Sending this from my Smart Phone powered by ... Windows Mobile 5 - sorry! ;-)
