Don't expect too much from any of them without some government intervention.

AT&T (Ma Bell) was already broken up once, and the oligopoly we've got now isn't much better.

Yeah, they have been saying since the iPhone came out that they are upgrading their network. But so far nothing has really been done, and I feel that we will be waiting for a while longer

So, instead of saying "we can't handle the unexpected network demand from our wildly successful product, but be patient, we're working on a solution!," AT&T chose to say "our infrastructure is so insecure that any cell-phone with hacked base-band software could be a national security threat?"

It is because AT&T network can't handle the load. Some people think it is a double standard where other devices on their network do have apps like slingbox and google voice. But the number of iphones by far out number the other devices. AT&T doesn't have a fiber network as extensive as what Verizon does, to act as a backbone for their cell network, they keep making promises but nothing happens. In fact Comcast could provide better service if they put up cell towers and allowed iphone traffic.

AT&T complete underestimated how big the iphone was going to be. Their network at this point cannot handle 5+ million subscribers using iphones, and all the features that the iphone provides. Iphones use more data all other phones, it is more in line with pc data consumption. Verizon may not provide better service, they don't have a phone at the moment that comes close to the amount of data usage that the iphone has. Maybe when they get the Pre next year we will see just how their network stands up.
