Hi,
Apparently in Ottawa it's the opposite. I have to keep up with what my
boss writes. James it's just the beginning.

Well the argument is that in the area of communication (written or

to
express one's self using gadgets (with all the current limitations and
information overload) as opposed to the usual pen and paper. If a
kid doesn't
learn to read/write/spell by year eight, no technology is going to
fill
that void. The next step would probably be a crash course in
'electronic
etiquette'. I do agree that within the 'standard norm' the tweet
itself might seem inapporpriate but the kid probably doesn't know
any better.
Their life is most likely encompassed by text messaging, tweeting,
IM and
other social networking genre.
The best approach for Prof. Bagye would be to tweet back (assuming
Paul
has a twitter account) stressing that they send the request through
standard email.
If you can't beat them. Join them (with help from a twictionary)

Simon, what has cursive writing or penmanship got to do with this
debate?
My own opinion is that people who are good with words (both spoken
and written) always tend to end up at the top of the corporate
ladder, whether they deserve it or not. And the brilliant engineers
who run the show in the boiler room but cannot write or speak well
to save their lives, always end up staying in the boiler room
unless they are tremendously gifted.

Cursive writing is fading skill, but so what?
Simon,
You are not going to send the boss an "ebonics" or tweet monthly
report
and think you will ever climb the corporate ladder above "trainee"
You work at Sheraton, Ministry of Health, Stanbic, MTN or Warid or
Shell or even my small company and you send words below ....
Lst mnth the seva crushed 2wice nd MS outlk did nt wrk 4 7usrs
but ISP lnk was OK
...... as your monthly report to the head of IT and you think you
are headed to replace the Head of IT in this lifetime or the
next???!!
I would say if you believe that then you should stop sniffing the
white powder and get into rehab.
You will be labeled ignorant or barely literate, or worse.
If you think that the heroes of the next generation should the
Steve Jobs, bill gates, the Google Guys, Linus or even old guys
like Buffet
and create wealth and industry and that is how they write a request
for funding to a venture capital firm
or even how they write a company profile or business proposal to
present to a bank!!!
The guy who creates twitter or google does not care that millions
or billions of illiterate people who cannot spell use it and he/she
makes money
But do not think that he/she is as illiterate as the users.

Brace yourself for more of those 'ebonics' tweets. Twitter Inc. is
a $1 billion industry and it's here stay.

Fewer schools emphasize ‘penmanship’ as computer use increases

Disappointing I should say. Bagye, it is very embarrassing for a

fail to draw the line between serious communication and shirty

he/she writes in formal English as per the J.A Bright rules.
While doing a
techie assignment recently online, I was asked to come up with a
5000 word
document on a topic. Imagine if I had used such despicable
lingua, would my
lecturer have looked at me twice?
A big shame and please lets not heap the blame on the teachers

also sms, chatting, twitter, facebook, YouTube e.t.c. When he/
