It sounds to me like you are having problems with your hardware. run Memtest
overnight (it's a boot option on Ubuntu installer disk) and see if the
machine crashes. As it's a Dell, it may record some hardware failure data in
the BIOS. Try looking for a BIOS entry relating to logging and check for any
indication that there was a hardware failure.
