I went through the same experience one time when 10.04 had just been
released, on a Dell Latitude 100L with the same Memory as you have
stated.
I actually failed to install it(took more than 3hours trying to install
after the selections are made) and I realised it was going to take for
ever.
When I aborted and tried a lower version of KUBUNTU, things went on
smoothly.
I didnt want to conclude that Ubuntu 10.04 is a Memory (RAM) 'greedy' OS
but it might be the truth. I dont want to say it is a display hardware
issue, but try some things small or try increasing the Memory and see
what happens.
Thank you.
