I believe it mainly based on X Windows unsuitability for mobile architecture such as tablets and ARM based devices, which probably quite rightly they see as a big part of the market. I also don't know why people love to panic over this, we already know anything removed will always be a apt-get away ;-) Pidigin/GIMP anyone?
