Simon,
I was not able to install the Unity desktop. By default, Natty installs the 3D
Unity desktop and my laptop is only 2D. I had to install it manually using the
following commands
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unity-2d-team/unity-2d-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install unity-2d
It should work well.

Dominic,
Were you able to get the new Unity desktop installed?
I have gotten stories of people who have done online upgrades and failed to get
Unity.
Kind regards,
P.

BM,
I just made an online upgrade. From the look of it, most of my packages were
not affected by the upgrade save for my OpenERP Web application which was
affected by an upgrade from Python 2.6 to Python 2.7 which comes with Natty.

Thomas,

You lose the applications as well when you upgrade - I think
particularly if you use a disc - someone can comment on a net

install/upgrade.
When the upgrade is done, you have to go through the hustle of

reinstalling software that is not on the cd or basic installation.
That implies development environments, tweaks and packages of all kinds
have to be reinstalled to get the system to what you want it to be.

So be it an upgrade or a clean install, you have to install certain
packages afresh.

Regards,
BM.
