Hmm. Apple gets bad shtick for the wrong reasons in my view. At least when they don't play nice with the OSS crowd, it's in the interests of efficiency and user happiness. M$ on the other hand screws up because it is confused about what its own future is.
M$ is in all probability going to screw this up for Joe Public. Tell me where M$ has done social networking well and I'll change my view. Corporate user will benefit of course as I expect Skype IP will make it into some kind of voice thingie integrated into Windows Messenger Server (or whatever they call it these days). Facebook would have been a more interesting buyer. As for Linux, don't think Skype will go away or suffer. Too many users, and everybody believes in social networking these days, and you have to be platform accommodating (up to a point) to play well in that space. Alternative OSS app? I doubt very much that one will present arise given how quite simply functional skype is. P.
