I dont get whats so complicated about free.

ESXi4 is definitely free the only 'cost' associated with it is training or
support. for for linux aficionados such as LUG list members training and
support may not be so critical. You can just post a question here or browse
the extensive vmware KB and/or forums.

Now if you want to use Vmware enterprise options, then you have to pay. but
as you can see below ESXi (now know as vSphere Hypervisor) is Free. And so
is Vmware server 2 which sits ontop of an existing Os such as Win7, ubuntu,
centos etc ... None of the other alternatives have enterprise options as
robust as Vmwares offering so essentially that is a moot point.

from their website:
VMware vSphere Hypervisor is the new name for what was formerly known as
VMware ESXi Single Server or free ESXi (often abbreviated to simply “VMware
ESXi”). VMware vSphere Hypervisor <http://www.vmware.com/go/get-free-esxi> is
the free edition of the vSphere production line. It is licensed to only
unlock the hypervisor functionality of vSphere, but it can be seamlessly
upgraded to more advanced offerings of VMware vSphere. VMware vSphere is
available in multiple
editions<http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere/mid-size-and-enterprise-business/buy.html>
including
several options specifically designed for small
businesses<http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere/small-business/buy.html>
.

So to cut a long story short. If you want to experiment with virtuals use
any of the many free options available. If you want a free production server
capable Virtual platform. get Vmware
