Micheal, .tar.gz and .tar.bz are archive file types ie they are in the same family as .zip and .rar. Usually when you download an application and you get it in that format, its the source code. You have to compile and install it. When you extract the contents in the .tar.gz or the .tar.bz using may be Archive Manager there is usually a text file called README which has instructions on how to compile and install that software. In some cases its called INSTALL.
