What the real scary thing is (if you are using the Google API) is that they
changed their own rules twice this year. First they allowed themselves to put
adds on your maps, now they introduce charging.

And btw, all that nice volunteer work that people are doing for them? If they
charge, shouldnt they start paying those volunteers, too? They need to power
their laptops just as much as Google their servers.

And then, to bring this whole thing back to Open (which is what we tend to
discuss here, instead of Closed), when you spend time uploading your data to
this foreign profit generating 1% corporation, can you get your own data back
like this:

http://open.mapquestapi.com/xapi/api/0.6/node[amenity=fuel]
[bbox=29.5,-1.5,32.8,1]
(thats a list of all petrol station around Kampala in openstreetmap)

And then actually use it in an application that is not controlled by the big
corporation?

(yes, you can, if you are poor poor NGO who needs help. Then, at the mercy of
the big corporation, you might get your *own* data back.)

Else, if its just you and me, and you want to lend a hand to create the first
detailed map of Uganda since 1964, you give away all your data to a foreign
entity under a EULA that changes constantly.

wow, thats a bad deal.

is really there core business, its a long term shot.

nominal fee for a service level agreement in which case i think they might
provide a standard one to the paying customers you can be sure of a good
service, free does not always mean better service, changing goal posts because
of a small fee might not be in anyones best interest especially long term,
adaptability is required and modelling.

resources and management a price point has been reached aftet a long time to
quantify the freemium model google has been using for this service, its not
expensive i think but it does gurantee you a piece of mind, paying always does
not paying well you just never know, things happen ;).
