I prefer MIUI myself.
I then turn off data, Wi-Fi and gps when I am not using them.
I also installed hackers keyboard for the full qwerty experience.
I installed linkedin, facebook and Hotmail to sync ALL my contact details
(uninstalled them after)
I am using an HTC HD2 cause it is the only truly universal smartphone
allowing me to install windows 6.5, android or even wp7 if I want.
I have an 8gb micro sd to allow easy flashing.
While I hate apple, I disagree with the assessment on price alone. An apple
device gives true VALUE FOR MONEY. Like Orange data prices,
I would pay for any apple device based on value ALONE. Look at the iPad's
8hr battery. No other tablet boasts that YET.
I use android because like Linux, it is an OS I can truly make my own.
Unlike the CONVOLUTED learning curve of windows, the steepish one
for Linux and the LIFE ALTERING on for mac (only Vi can compete with
Textmate), the android OS is real easy and while tightly coupled to
google, it is still open or "loosely curated" (unlike the JUSTIFIABLY anal
curation that is apple).

Since I have put Cyanogenmod on my Motorola Defy it works much better than
with the Motorola firmware. Perhaps you could give that a try.
