Not *need*, but rather, ideally, should. The reason is that when the MDS comes up, the opportunity for clients to get object pointers exists. It's better that the OSTs are up to serve the expected object requests when that happens. Conversely, when shutting down, ideally you shut down the MDS first so that the ability for clients to get object pointers goes away before the OSTs serving them go away. b.
