While I have never tried what you are describing, I am just assuming that 
changing the ZFS version will require a rebuild of Lustre.  The error messages 
you reported reminded me of similar errors I have seen on a couple of occasions 
where OFED was upgraded on a system, but Lustre was not rebuilt against the new 
version.
