I would not have thought the rose as being much of a deterrent to a 
hungry rodent.  Especially If you have been accustomed to eating crumbly 
cookies during lute practice!!.

A rat in a lute isn't impossible.  A brass instrument repairman I
know was recently asked to repair a tuba.  He found the problem, a
blockage caused by a desiccated rat.
