Many modern people react with incomprehending loss to things perceived as
dangerous to society: abortion, drugs, alcohol, divorce, race relations,
industrialization, or the entire West (in the case of Islamic
fundamentalists). All of these have led to modern violence, as in the
Russian collectivization wars, or the American Prohibition.

In Medieval times, such feelings were, perhaps, more pronounced and
parochial. And with justification protective of the Church.

Comedy may be found in modern Inquisition apologists who point out that
the accused could be tortured only _one_ time, in attempt to extract a
confession. "Remember, Brother Williame, you have only one shot at
this...".
