Even before you set a strap button into your lute (it is strong enough because there is a wooden reinforcement at that end where all the ribs come together, plus the capping strip on the outside) you might consider any number of material or cushions to help hold your lute in place and grip it: chamois cloth, leather, under-rug foam cushions, neoprene. If that doesn't work, then the strap might the best option.
