I have just finished adding Hans Gerle's instructions to the Fret Placement Spreadsheet ( http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~lsa/download/index.html#frets ). Even at the relatively late date of that reference (1532), he says, "...*if* you wish to add an eighth fret...," and makes no mention of any beyond that. On the other hand, artists renderings of vihuela/viola de/da mano-style instruments from the late 15th century often show 10 tied frets.
