in the jordi savall article in last week's economist (apr 22-28) he suggests that musicians should perform from the score as "memorization is the same as performing on autopilot and stifles a necessary element of unpredictability" (quoted from the article, not directly from mr. savall.) "the only contact we have with the composer is the music," savall is quoted as saying. "it's important to have this relationship, but it's a balance between discipline and freedom." the article also mentions savall's regard for the 16th cent. composer diego ortiz and the rules of improvisation he outlines in his "tratado de glosas." anyone with a reader's digest command of these points has my undivided, completely unabridged attention. all of which, i hasten to add, is very far removed from my own experience which is ... play the tune to death beforehand and listen to yourself very carefully thereafter while performing it in public. - bill early music charango ... http://groups.google.com/group/charango Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
