Gary: I can't imagine that Dowland escaped life without singing professionally. In Elizabethan times (as well as before and after), every musician was first trained to sing and given instruction on instruments after learning the rudiments of music. There is no doubt in my mind that a person, such as Dowland, who presumably came from a common background was not first pressed into service singing liturgical music. Whether he sang well is another question.
