Actually this is not off-topic:  Merle Travis played only with thumb  
and index.  The other three fingers were clearly resting on the  
pickguard.  I watched him play on occasion "back in the day'" and I  
never saw him use anything besides thumb and index.

The point of saying that?  I don't know of any other fingerpicker who  
ever played like that.  Just because MT was an expert doesn't mean  
everybody else used his technique.
