The Diapason Press edition of the Wilson preludes (ed. Spring) is not very satisfactory. The tablature has been reduced in size and is nearly (if not actually) impossible to read from a music stand. One person told me he had to copy out the tablatures to make a playing copy. Of course, one could enlarge the tablature using Xerox.
It was the printer's mistake. The pages with tablature have two-inch margins all around, and using that space might make the tablatures large enough to read. There are other problems with that edition, too. I find it is a common mistake in tablature editions to print the tablature too small. Often larger type might take up no more space. The ciphers would just be closer together. A much neater page would result. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jean-Marie Poirier" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "lute" <lute@cs.dartmouth.edu> Sent: Monday, October 06, 2008 12:52 PM Subject: [LUTE] Re: John Wilson Preludes | Thank you for the tip, Howard, but I must say that is one of the most impractical sites I have ever visited online :-( ! . I could not find out how it worked and how you could order anything from them. Eventually I wrote to the address indicated for Diapason Press on the site and never got an answer...That was more than 6 months ago. I am still waiting. | I hope and wish Manuel will be luckier than me. | | As a matter of fact, I bought the Garland Press volume 7 with John Wilson's works. Not the same price, but the manuscript facsimile and a lot of music in there. So now I have no regret they did not reply my order query. | | Apart from all that, I must admit Wilson's music IS fantastic ! | | All the best, | | Jean-Marie | | ======= 06-10-2008 16:28:56 ======= | | > | >Matthew Spring has done a modern edition of the solo pieces in tab | >and keyboard transcription | > | >http://diapason.xentonic.org/dp/dp049.html | > | > | >On Oct 6, 2008, at 7:13 AM, howard posner wrote: | > | >> It's in Volume 7 of the Garland Press "English Song 1600-1675, along | >> with a couple hundred pages of Wilson's songs. | >> | >> On Oct 6, 2008, at 5:41 AM, Gmail Manuel Minguillon Nieto wrote: | >> | >>> Which is the fastest and easiest way of getting John Wilson | >>> Preludes from manuscript of the Bodleian Library, Mus.
