It is certain that what you are calling pulling is what I am calling
bending. This was the reason for my remarks:

So I am calling bending what you were calling "pulling it sideways" ,
and I am saying that this is not what Lex was saying, which was
"pulling or pushing ... in the direction of the bridge or nut."
This is not at cross purposes, this is an answer to your "perhaps."
The practice of pushing and pulling strings towards the bridge or nut,
(i.e., axially) is not pulling sideways, and need not have a sideways
component to affect significant pitch change.
