It wasn't necessary when I re-attached the pegbox to my new Baroque
lute- which arrived, Portland Oregon to Phila. PA from the late Bob
Lundberg in 1976, in two pieces; sans screws, nails, dowels, and-
obviously- enough glue. End wood on the pegbox had absorbed too much
glue; starving the joint, which then separated in transit. I have
wondered if a screw- if not sufficient to hold the entire joint
together- would have just dug out wood from the end of the neck and
caused a truly horrendous irreparable mess?
I glued it back on myself rather than subject the instrument to two more
cross-country airplane rides. Titebond II, the whole thing lashed down
together to a board; large rubber bands, shoelaces, and what-not holding
all in place while drying & curing. No hardware or dowels. The lute has
since gone cross-country on trips, moves, seminars, gigs & concerts-
that joint is holding up better than my own joints.

Just wondering how many builders fix the pegobx to the neck using a
screw, or just glue. There is a biggish surface when attaching the
pegbox, is it necessary to include a screw?
