Ross Duffin wrote a very measured and comprehensive chapter entitled 'Tuning and Temperament' in 'A Performer's Guide to Renaissance Music' (Indiana University Press). He reviews the difficulties of using meantone on fretted instruments (and notably lutes) and discusses the various solutions that can be envisaged.
For those of you wishing to listen to the expressive qualities of meantone temperament in the context of chromatic phrases, I would highly recommend Marco Vitale's recording of Sweelinck's Fantasia chromatica played on an original Ruckers spinet virginal dated 1604.
