Oh. Hmm. I've just been using pretty much the defaults that Kubuntu
14.04 has and it's been fine.
I didn't need to put the mem= line to boot it up, and it's been
reporting around 1875M of memory?

It did boot up *faster* once I added some recommended bit about i915
modesetting.
I do note that something added "add_efi_memmap" to the boot parameters though.
