Cloudflare got mentioned. One of the ways they make their presence known to the general public is their bot detection. I think part of that involves getting javascript to do a time consuming calculation. If that accidentally got turned on for a site that didn't want the service (or the site operator didn't understand how the service was implemented), it would almost certainly lock out Lynx.
