Since we are at it (I have recently updated from 0.12 to 1.0.2 and
I can run LaTeX exactly once in a LyX session - never
touch a running systen *argh*): It would be *really* nice to have the
possibility to run LaTeX once (and only once), no matter in what state the
document is.

I'd like to hear an answer to this question, too ;-) Actually, adding
intelligence of this sort reminds me to some "smart" solutions I have
struggeled with on the Dark Side. Since then, I've learned a couple of
things:

   a) always expect a 10% chance of Really Dumb (tm) behaviour, when
      using a Smart Thing.

   b) smart things tend to turn up in bloated apps.

   c) bloated apps don't run well.

Seconded. There should be a simple standard behaviour for anything. Be
it for running LaTeX or for inserting spaces after periods (remember
that discussion?) or anything else.

PS: No, I don't want to offend somebody, its just my casual tone ;-)
    If LyX weren't that great I certainly wouldn't use it.
