Of course there is a reason why this modification of Uwe is not official, it's because many people find it annoying.
Why do we have auto toolbars at all? It looks like nobody likes them. If someone can create a patch that makes LyX remember whether the toolbars were on or off, we already have a good solution. I agree with keeping the auto toolbars outside of the GUI until we have something better.
