Agreed, but only if the converter wants to preserve that flexibility and power. But would the conversion still be difficult if most of the formatting is stripped away? Anything, that is, that does not carry semantic value? What I am (wishfully) thinking of is minimal even if very lossy converter.

There is, however, a good trend that word
processors are using open formats like XML, which makes conversion a
lot easier. The roadmap of lyx regarding these, as far as I can see is
that

1. convert to XML format (perfect XML->latex from lyx)
2. use something like plasTeX to do latex->XML conversion.
3. find/write good tools for XML-> whatever word/ooffice/html conversion.


That may be the way to go, but it seems to me it wastes energy by setting goals too high.
