This red boxes are the bounding box of the text-inset where you can insert
some text. It is not possible to make them larger if the cell does not have
a fixed width (otherwise they are), and a simple cursor-right or cursor-left
let you enter the text inset, where you then can start typing text and do
all the stuff you could do on normal LyXText.

I understand that sometime (if the cell is still empty) and you click in
it with the mouse then you may not hit the inset, but a simple cursor-key
movement put's you in the enter area.

I could ALWAYS enter the text inset immediately, BUT then you could not
anymore be able to do selections of part of the tabular!

I also understand that this is a change in the behaviour of LyXTabulars,
but IMO if you know how it works it is not that much more (type)work.
