One of the packages I use (xisp) pops up hints in boxes. It uses
xforms-0.89.
I find them a bit obtrusive when I don't need them, but they would help
new users, and they can be turned off.
The other part of this question was Edit->Table->Append (Row/Col).
It is always greyed out for me.
