Segfaults on startup are almost always due to using an xforms library
compiled for a different libc version to what your system runs. You
should make sure that the xforms library package you are using has a name
of the form bxforms-0.88-glibc. If you installed the xforms package that
came with SuSE this should already be okay -- I run SuSE-6.3 at home it's
fine in this regard.

If all else fails go to ftp.sylvan.com/pub/lyx and get a copy of the
xforms rpm from there. It's setup for RedHat based distributions so some
of the documentation will probably end up in the wrong directory but don't
worry about that at least it'll work.

The .lyx files are all in ascii so you can still read them with `more` or
`less` or whatever text editor you prefer. You'll just have a few
formatting commands to read through as well.
