But inserting -- and --- is much easier and less error-prone. And it's easier 
to recognize.

Also, AFAIU, word users usually do not insert dashes via the Symbols dialog, 
but they rely on Word's "automatic" dash recognition, which incredibly often 
goes wrong. My experience is that wrong dashes is the most recurrent 
typographic error in Word and OOo documents (next to wrong closing single 
quotation marks).
