it depends from which background do the newbie comes. if its the tex one
then --- is pretty intuitive. if they are office descendands then i suspect
they have never heard about the typographical differences between en/em 
dashes and are used to put simple "-" everywhere.

so for them lerning those "-/--/---" is the same as learning (not) doing
multiple spaces or linebreaks (also being "unintuitive" in lyx).

imho not too much to ask them to learn. using symbols dialog is uneasy to use
and easy to overlook, moreover when we are speaking about newbies.
