OK. But as we already have a consistent set of icons, why throwing out
of the window something that already required a huge amount of work?
There could simply be a new option "use the new, shiny, wonderful
oxygen icons"?

I can definitely understand that you got used to the old icons. I however don't think that any designer would consider them to be consistent. It's basically a mix of different stock icons from the Windows 95/98 and KDE 1/2 era combined with custom ad-hoc designs by developers who introduced a new feature needing an icon. It does not at all match the style of modern operating environments like Windows 7, KDE 4 or GNOME. Just compare LyX with other software like OpenOffice 3 or Microsoft Word 2010 and you'll see what I mean. I think new users will look at this very differently.

Also we have to consider future developments. If we stick with the current set, it's never going to be possible to support different icon sizes or other features of modern user interfaces. Nobody is going to redesign this old and inconsistent mix in new sizes for example. Sometimes it's better to make a more radical change which will allow us to move into the right future direction. Surely there remains a lot of room for improvement in the UI and icons, but if these kind of changes never happen we cannot move forward. Anyway, let's wait for some other opinions.
