I agree about the layouts. (I broke a LyX installation testing out these techniques.) I was actually thinking about LaTeX style sheets, fonts, and such. Quite literally, just adding the directory onto the TEXINPUTS variable: e.g. export TEXINPUTS=/path/to/lyx/file/folder:$PATH or somesuch. When I work with LaTeX users, this is exactly how we exchange documents. Rather than install the class, we just put in the same directory as the file we're working on. I'd go even one further. I'd like to see some sort of package system for LyX which combines modules, document classes, and related styles into a single archive that can be installed and uninstalled at will.
