In fact, with latest cvs, I am not able to use the accent-acute
function. It produces stupid input. I thought I was supposed to be
able to type
  M-x accent-acute
  e
and get an 'é'. This is not the case on either linux/0.89.6 or
tru64/0.88.1. 

I get either some x, or an empty footnote.
