I have tried it out on my iMac and indeed it does not work. Even on this
old machine the text looks wrong. So it is not only a problem of HiDPI IMO.

Yes I actually didn't find any noticeable improvement in scrolling
compared to 2.1.4. The problem is not really the speed of
scrolling, but the smoothness of scrolling. There is a noticeable
jerkiness when you scroll up and down. Enabling pixel map cache
will improve the situation a little bit for both versions, but
compared to many other OS X apps (such as Safari, Preview, TeXShop
etc), the scrolling experience is much less satisfactory. But I
think this is a relatively minor issue compared to the missing
character display bug I mentioned.
Scrolling is jerky, we know that. I have some ideas to improve the
situation, but I prefer to try them out first.
The answer from Zhexuan is not that discouraging :)
If we cannot solve the pixmap cache issue we may disable it for the
alpha release, IMO.
Sure. But even before that, we can try to determine whether it gives any
performance boost. The 'fixed' version will not be faster IMO.
