I'm now trying oprofile/operf, just to compare output.

that's quite similar

How do we know what are the freetype settings in effect (anitalisaing,
hinting, ...)?

OK, it is
  xrdb -query |grep Xft

On my ubuntu 12.40 station I get:
Xft.dpi: 96
Xft.antialias: 1
Xft.hinting: 1
Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
Xft.rgba: none
Xft.lcdfilter: none

This means that I have slgight grayscale antialiasing.

Note that AFAIK, subpixel aliasing does not work with LyX, since we paint on an intermediate Pixmap and not directly on screen.
