Enable maintainer mode is jus a matter of rebuilding automatically configure and the makefiles. It is on in development builds.

--enable-stdlib-debug is on with development builds. I had thoughts about using the newer _GLIBCXX_ASSERTIONS, which only does bound checking (and not things like checking that an iterator is really from the container you are using it on, for example), but I do not know what is best.

There is a table of these things in INSTALL. I see maintainer mode is missing.

Kornel, it would be nice if we could agree what check is on of depending on type of build. If you disagree with some of my choices, I can change them. But users should have basically the same results in both systems, IMO.
